Research Interest:

We are developing framework alternatives and multi-methodologies in Systems Engineering to support the life cycle of systems and materials for the Brazilian Air Force.

Our research and development efforts focus on:

  • Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) - Exploring its application in system design, enhancing collaboration and iteration processes, and improving existing languages, tools, and methodologies.
  • Modeling and Simulation (M&S) - Advancing simulation techniques, visualization methods, and interactive approaches to enhance concept design and validation.

A key area of our work is XR4MBSE, which integrates Extended Reality (XR) technologies—including Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality—as human-machine interfaces to optimize Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) processes.

Complexity and Multi-Domain Integration

No system exists in complete isolation—there are inherent relationships among all components that constitute a system.

In operational contexts, tactics, techniques, and procedures are traditionally categorized by domains. However, these domains are fundamentally interconnected. Actions within the land domain may require coordination with naval and air operations, or any combination thereof. Similarly, cross-cutting domains, such as space, social, and cyber, can—and often should—be integrated into the analysis of operational concepts.

Critical infrastructures, large-scale simulations, metropolitan hubs, airports, seaports, transportation networks, medical systems, stadiums, and agribusiness sectors are all examples of systems of systems—complex arrangements that span multiple domains and require a holistic approach to analysis and management.

EMBM-VD

Model Based Mission Engineering - Virtual Demonstrator Context The systematic use of Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is emerging as a key approach for exploring complex system missions. As systems grow in complexity, the need for transdisciplinary analysis becomes increasingly critical. The rapid advancements brought by Industry 4.0 are revolutionizing how we understand and manage complex systems, creating new opportunities for enhanced decision-making, training,… Read More »EMBM-VD

Tangible Collaboration applied in Space Systems Concurrent Engineering Concept Studies

[INPE][PhD][2018] Tangible Collaboration applied in Space Systems Concurrent Engineering Concept Studies

Abstract: The first development phase of a Space Mission consists of the Space System Concept Studies, in which system concepts are broadly defined, as a set of feasible System Conceptual Solutions to accomplish the mission needs. Nowadays, this phase involves the practices of System Engineering (SE) and Concurrent Engineering (CE), which respectively: (i) organizes the systems investigation/documentation methodology,… Read More »[INPE][PhD][2018] Tangible Collaboration applied in Space Systems Concurrent Engineering Concept Studies

[INPE][MSc][2014] Virtual Reality Techniques employed into Satellite Operational Simulators

Abstract: Space Systems development requires understanding of several modelling and simulation resources to accomplish space mission goals. The largest and more complex simulator developed into the space mission context is the operational simulator, which aims to support all operational activities before, during and after launch. This work proposes a user interface based on virtual reality to satellite operational simulator,… Read More »[INPE][MSc][2014] Virtual Reality Techniques employed into Satellite Operational Simulators

[UNIFEI][2011] basAR - Behavioral Authoring System for Augmented Reality

basAR is an Augmented Reality Environment to create and use applications where behavior can be programmed to enhance the augmented experience. Some application examples are puzzles, building guides, schooling, games, etc. basAR applications are based on a concept of action points. Action points are the center of reactive zones from the Structure Layer that are… Read More »[UNIFEI][2011] basAR - Behavioral Authoring System for Augmented Reality
